Stop Expecting Everything To Be Fun
And start doing the things you don't like doing.
Just being honest… I spent way too many years of my life not working towards my purpose.
I got my degrees
I started working
And pretty much did just enough to be comfortable
And that was about it.
I started a few side hustles here and there, but I never stayed consistent with any of them.
Everytime I started something new, I eventually got tired of it. And once I got tired of it… I quit.
And that same cycle kept repeating itself year… after year… after year.
Until eventually I looked up and realized, I’m in my late 20s, and I still haven’t accomplished things I know I could have done in my early 20s.
Long story short…
I was trying to live life on easy mode. And even though I always thought I was a hard worker, I couldn’t stand doing anything I didn’t naturally enjoy.
And so, like many people, I spent a lot of time trying to find my passion.
In other words, I was trying to find something I could do day in and day out and never get tired of it.
And the moment the latest thing I was trying got boring, it was game over. A don dada. On to the next.
And after I thought about it long enough, I realized that I kept quitting things because… they stopped being fun.
And I had the mentality that I should only do work that I really enjoy. But that’s really a bad way to look at things.
Because even if you do work your dream job, more than likely there will at least be certain aspects of it that you don’t really care about.
And you only do them because you have to.
And that’s why it’s important to have a bigger purpose in life. And real goals to work toward.
Because that’ll give you the motivation to prioritize your time a lot better. And you’ll be more wiling to do something that’s not fun right now.
Because you know it’s going to lead to a greater benefit in the future.
What if you don’t have a passion?
But what if you’re the type of person that says nothing important to you?
What if you just want to be lazy all the time. And just lay in the bed and eat, all day, everyday?
You really don’t have a passion. So you’d rather just find a job you can tolerate, and just get by.
Well, I see two things wrong with that.
You might be confusing passion with pleasure. You think you can’t be passionate about something if you don’t like every single aspect of it.
Being lazy is not apart of your nature as a human being. When you procrastinate, all you do is create more problems for yourself.
And at the end of the day, your free time is 10x more enjoyable when it’s coming after you’ve been putting in work.
Think about it this way. If you get depressed, one of the first things people will tell you is to keep yourself busy. And they don’t say that for no reason.
What happens when you start doing things you don’t feel like doing.
When you make it your business to put in work, every other aspect of your life starts to get better.
You start to move with a purpose, and people notice it.
Once you finish all the work you need to get done, your free time is literally FREE time.
You finally get to do whatever you want, and not have to keeping thinking about the work that you didn’t do.
The truth you may not want to hear…
If you think you think you should only ever have to do stuff you enjoy doing, just understand that that way of thinking is not really going to get you anywhere in life.
You might be able to get by, but that’s about it. If you want to go far beyond your current circumstances, at some point you’re going to HAVE to do something you don’t feel like doing.
And then you’ll have to keep doing it, and keep doing it. Until you eventually reach a point where you don’t have to do it anymore.
But even then, you’ll still have to do SOMETHING. And after you do that something so many times…
You’ll more than likely get to a day where you don’t feel like doing it.
And you might not have known this, or even thought about it, but our brains are not designed to seek and find pleasure.
Our brains are designed to prioritize survival.
So when you avoid doing hard work and you chase pleasure every second of every day, you put your brain in a state it’s not meant to be in 24/7.
And that’s how you end up being stuck in life, not knowing where you went wrong or what you need to do to fix it.
So the best thing you can do for yourself right now is get comfortable with the idea of doing stuff you don’t feel like doing.
And stop thinking every single thing you do needs be fun.
“Discipline is doing the things you hate doing… and doing it like you love it.” -Mike Tyson
The real reason you hate being bored.
And here’s something else you should think about…
If you always chase pleasure, and you can’t stand doing something that’s not fun, that’s a good sign that your internal world is not fun.
And since your internal word is not fun, you try to find as much pleasure as you can in the external world.
And when something in the external world isn’t fun, you can’t stand it, because then your life is double unfun. So you need to fix that.
Get your internal world in order. Start making self improvement a priority, so you can learn to love living with your internal self.
And once you learn how to make your internal world more fun, you wont have as big of a need to chase pleasure in the external world.
Then you’ll realize that the stuff you been running from really isn’t all that bad, and a little hard work won’t kill you.
And just remember, at the end of the day, it’s up to you to make your life what you want it to be.
The EASIEST way to start getting stuff done.
So how do you go from being a pleasure addict, to a person that gets stuff done no matter how hard or boring it might be? It’s as simple as this:
Write down a list of things you need to do (specifically things that you’ve been avoiding).
Pick one.
Do it. Today.
Repeat this tomorrow.
And the next day.
Do that until all the things you’ve been putting off are done.
After you do that, I promise you, the feeling you get after the fact will be way better than the temporary good feelings you get when you’re being lazy.
If you’re lucky, you might even get addicted to that feeling.
And that’s one of the best things that can happen to you in this situation.
You get better at doing things you don’t feel like doing, then get addicted to the feeling of getting it all done.
And of course, once you get addicted to something, you want more and more of it.
What happens when you start getting stuff done?
So once you reach that point of being addicted to getting stuff done, which is a healthy addiction (unlike scrolling on social media all day and just wasting time)…
No one can stop you.
At that point, you’ll start to be in full control of where your life goes.
All you’ll need to do from that point on is set an intention for something you want to accomplish, and it’ll happen.
Because you’ll be the type of person that’s going to put the work in to make it happen. No matter what.
The only thing that will stop you at that point is not having a clear mission.
If you don’t have a clear mission, you might end up falling back in your lazy ways.
But if you do have a mission, it’ll very hard for you to lose focus.
So how do you find your mission?
Ask yourself:
If I could do whatever I want to make money, what would I do? What’s the main thing I want to accomplish in my life? Why?
Once you get the answer, start doing it. Get real specific with it.
Figure out what you need to do on a weekly basis and a daily basis to make it happen. Then start making it happen.
And before you say it, I already know it won’t be that easy. But that’s the point of this whole conversation.
You gotta get comfortable doing the stuff that’s not easy. That’s how you level up.
And just understand that your biggest asset in this whole equation is time. But time can also be your biggest enemy if you don’t manage it properly.
Watching YouTube videos is cool. Scrolling on IG or Tik Tok can be cool. But they take up time…
And the time you spend doing all that is time you can be spending getting a bag. Or at least working towards getting a bag.
It’s cool to chill every now and then and just relax, and do whatever you feel like doing.
But you gotta find that right balance.
Watching videos on YouTube and Tik Tok shouldn’t take up more time in your life than working on your purpose.
Even if you watch videos related to whatever your purpose is, at some point you need to start creating instead of consuming.
And sometimes, creating might not be as fun as consuming.
But who ever said everything you do has to be fun?
