Should You BULK Or CUT First?
The straightforward answer.
When you first start your fitness journey, one of the first things you might ask is…
Should you bulk or cut first?
If you’re skinny, you might feel like you wanna go ahead and put on some muscle mass.
But if you’re skinny fat…
Meaning you’re skinny overall but you still got a big belly...
You might feel like you wanna go on a cut so you can:
Get rid of the fat first
Put some muscle on later
You might be scared to bulk up first because:
You might put on even more fat
You think it’ll be harder to lose that fat later
But you also don’t wanna cut cause you’re already skinny…
So then you’ll just be EXTRA skinny.
Listen…
I feel your pain.
I was in that same position.
I had a skinny Dad Bod.
And I wanted to put on some muscle…
But I also wanted to get rid of my gut.
So for me it just came down to deciding which one I wanted to do more.
And at the end of the day I ended up choosing to go on a cut first.
I got all that fat off my stomach, and I still was able to tone up a bit.
And to be honest with you…
I’m happy with the results I got.
Now there was some downsides with going on a cut first…
And I’ll explain those in a minute.
But now that got good results with my cut…
I’m transitioning into a bulk.
And I’m doing a clean bulk.
So I might put on a lil fat…
But it won’t be as much as it was at first.
And since I already went through a cut…
I already know I’ll be able to get rid of whatever extra fat I do put on.
So as far as whether you should go on a cut or a bulk first…
I’ll say it depends on how big or small you are right now.
If you’re SUPER skinny right now…
Like extra extra skinny…
I would say just bulk up first.
And the reason say that is that if you’re already super skinny…
And then you start eating even less calories to get rid of your stomach fat…
You’ll just end up having no energy.
When I was getting towards the end of my cut…
I was at the lower range of my ideal weight.
And I basically got to a point where I just felt like I was always on E.
And so if you’re super skinny and you start off with a cut…
You’ll probably get to that point right away.
So go ahead and bulk up first, so you don’t have those problems.
Just make sure you do a clean bulk so you don’t put on too much fat.
Now if you’re 16% body fat or more…
And definitely if your above 20%…
I would say you should cut first.
(For women… just add 7-9% to what I said.)
If you bulk first…
You’ll just start piling more fat on top of the fat you already have.
Then you’ll have to cut even longer when it’s time to cut.
Meaning that’s more time you’ll have to try to resist all the cravings you’ll get…
Meaning you have more opportunities to fail and lose all your hard earned progress.
But if you start with the cut first…
You can get it over with, and then you can fully enjoy the bulk…
Without having to worry about putting on too much fat that you can’t lose.
Now regardless of which one you commit to…
If you don’t workout consistently, specifically doing resistance training. Like:
Weightlifting
Calisthenics
Then everything you eat will turn into more fat anyway.
Obviously your diet is a big factor…
But you gotta make sure you take the time to actually workout if you want the best results.
Now if you live a busy life and you don’t really have time to workout…
It’ll help you see exactly what you need to do to make time for fitness…
And still be able to balance everything else that you got going on.
And I also put a bonus section in there that explains how you can lose fat and build muscle at the same time.
And I’ll catch you later.
Peace.
